About Chhath Puja
A four-day Vedic festival of gratitude to the Sun — ancient, pure, and celebrated with unmatched devotion across the world.
Vedic Origins
Mentioned in the Rigveda and Atharva Veda, Chhath traces to ancient Vedic sun worship. Draupadi observed Chhath during exile, and Karna — son of Surya Dev — established offering Arghya while standing in water. A 3,000+ year tradition.
Why at the Waterside?
Standing waist-deep in a river to offer Arghya symbolises direct union with nature. Sun rays refracting through water create the most sacred form of offering. Communities build temporary ghats with immense devotion.
The Sacred Prasad
Thekua — a crispy wheat-jaggery biscuit — is the iconic Chhath prasad. Offerings include sugarcane, coconut, seasonal fruits and rice laddoos, prepared with strict purity and distributed after Usha Arghya.
The 36-Hour Fast
The nirjala vrat — waterless fast — is among Hinduism's most rigorous austerities. The vratin abstains from food and water for 36 hours, from Kharna evening until Usha Arghya sunrise. A supreme act of devotion.
Chhath Geet
Soul-stirring folk songs passed down orally through generations are sung through the night before Usha Arghya. 'Kelwa Ke Paat Par' and 'Ugi He Suruj Dev' fill the air with emotion and community spirit.
