What is Chhath Puja?
A four-day Vedic festival of gratitude to the Sun — ancient, pure, and celebrated with unmatched devotion.
Vedic Origins
Mentioned in the Rigveda and Atharva Veda, Chhath's origins trace to Vedic sun worship. Draupadi observed Chhath during the Pandavas' exile, and Karna — son of Surya Dev — is credited with establishing the practice of standing in water to offer Arghya. Over 3,000 years old.
Why at the Waterside?
Standing waist-deep in a river while offering Arghya symbolises direct union with nature. The sun's rays refracting through water creates the most sacred form of offering. Communities without rivers build temporary ghats with immense devotion.
The Sacred Prasad
Thekua — a crispy wheat-jaggery biscuit — is the iconic Chhath prasad. Offerings include sugarcane, coconut, seasonal fruits and rice laddoos. All prasad is prepared with strict purity and distributed to all after Usha Arghya.
The 36-Hour Fast
The nirjala vrat (waterless fast) is among Hinduism's most rigorous austerities. The vratin abstains from all food and water for 36 hours — from Kharna's evening meal until Usha Arghya at sunrise — a supreme act of devotion.
Chhath Geet
Soul-stirring folk songs passed down orally through generations are sung through the night before Usha Arghya. Melodies like 'Kelwa Ke Paat Par' and 'Ugi He Suruj Dev' fill the air with overwhelming emotion and community spirit.
About SEG ARGHYA
ARGHYA is the Chhath Puja Association of Eden Garden Residential Society. We bring residents from Bihar and Jharkhand together to celebrate their culture authentically — a proper ghat, communal Arghya, cultural programme and prasad for all.
Four Sacred Days
Nahay Khay
Devotees take a holy dip in a sacred waterbody and cook a sattvic meal in earthen vessels, offered to Surya Dev before eating — formally starting the vrat.
Kharna
A full day fast is broken at sunset with Kheer cooked with jaggery in an earthen pot over a wood fire, along with puri — distributed as highly auspicious prasad.
Sandhya Arghya
The grand ghat ceremony. Devotees stand in water offering Arghya to the setting sun amid folk songs. The night is spent singing Chhath Geet in an all-night vigil.
Usha Arghya
Final Arghya at sunrise completes the 36-hour fast. Prasad is joyfully distributed and the community celebrates with a shared breakfast.
